Everyone talks about Farmers’ Markets as though they have always been about. In fact the movement is barely twenty years old and the Teme Valley Market was one of the originals.
The Markets Promotion Group in Wigtown is running weekly farmers markets, from Easter till October. The Wigtown market has grown rapidly in size and now has an average of 26 stalls every week, including fresh meat, fruit and vegetables as well as jewellery, clothes, music and books. For visitors, the Market provides an excellent opportunity to visit Scotland’s National Book Town and do your weekly organic shopping at the same time.
A centre for trade and commerce for over 2,000 years, hosts the weekly Farmers’ Market in Gloucester. Occupying all four of the Gate Streets the market has a fine range of local produce including a superb range of seasonal vegetables, a huge range of Soft Fruits throughout the summer and Top Fruit in the autumn, 2 local Bakeries, locally reared Meats, Poultry and Game, Goat’s cheeses, Eat Square Pies, Fresh Olives, Preserves, free range Eggs, a great selection of Street Food including Niang’s Thai Snacks, Za’Za Falafel and Marinades Caribbean, plus Plants for the garden.
Milngavie marks the start (or if heading south) the finish of the Highland Way. For walkers what better way to stock up food for the trip than to stop at the Milngavie farmers’ market. This weekday market is well supported by locals but visitors are most welcome. A variety of produce from all over Scotland is on offer.
Seafood lovers will warm to this farmers’ market as it is located right by the famous Loch Fyne Restaurant in Argyll. Feast on wonderful seafood after checking out the varied produce on the stalls such as Winston Churchill venison, Isabella’s Preserves, Inverloch cheese and Fyne Ales, all produced locally in the splendid scenery of Argyll
Situated at the foot of the Mull of Kintyre, Campbelltown is a small community where the farmers’ market has been set up by local food and craft producers. The market acts as a focal point for the community each month but visitors are made very welcome.
Super Saturdays are themed street market events which take place in Fraserburgh on the 2nd Saturday of each month from May to September and one in Dec.
Peterhead is now the busiest white fish port in Europe and the largest fishing port in the European Community. The town was one of the first farmers’ markets in Aberdeenshire and features a wide range of stalls including Cairn O Mohr Wines, The Hame Bakery, Ingrams Homecure and Veg in a Box.
