The Crannach Bakery was started by Doug Cookson in 1999. Originally planned as a gallery and coffee shop, the bakery side of the business quickly took off as Crannach Bread became very popular . Doug’s aim of making everything from scratch with the very best ingredients meant that he soon began to investigate baking his own bread. In 2002 he trained with master artisan baker Andrew Whitley. Now an award-winning Scottish baker, Doug finds his delicious bread, scones and cakes are in great demand especially at local farmers’ markets.
Traditional techniques, bespoke ingredients, passion and technical know-how. From sprouted rye sourdough to our luscious malt loaf, our recipes are unique to us and you won’t find bread like it anywhere else.
Our range of products varies with the seasons, as the ingredients become available, and includes Jams and Chutneys. However our famous Gingerbread and Christmas Puddings remain firm favourites and we can be found cooking up small batches all year round.
The Old Post Office Bakery, London’s Oldest Organic Bakery, was born in the early 80’s, the child of an illicit union between London’s 60’s and 70’s counterculture and an ancient European tradition of artisan bread making. Flowing through its veins was always a DIY ethic, a deeply held belief in resourcefulness, and the desire to create wholesome foods from simple ingredients.
The Old Village Bakery is located in the village of Melmerby, only a short walk away from Melmerby Hall, Stag Cottage and Kirkbride Hall. The cafe is open daily and serves delicious breakfasts, lunches, coffees, homemade bread and cakes and has a lovely ladies fashion, interior and gift shop upstairs called ‘Hollberrie‘ which is definitely worth a visit to support local independent retailing! You can also buy fresh bread, cakes and scones, coffee and other locally sourced and produced foods.
