Lembas

Lembas

We have been growing organic vegetables near Aberdeen since 1980. First we were working for the Camphill Rudolf Steiner Schools in Milltimber near Aberdeen and after a short spell back in Holland we set ourselves up in Maryculter as an independent business growing organic vegetables for supermarkets. Over the years we switched to supplying local markets, notably all the Camphill communities around Aberdeen as well as to organic box schemes in the area, and we also operate a box scheme ourselves.

Dowhill

Dowhill

A large, well-put-together farm shop, café and gift shop with a beautiful view, Dowhill offers a good range of local produce. From Ayrshire ice-cream to Girvan beef, this is a practical shop that offers a real alternative to the supermarket. They stock veg from the farm, and produce their own frozen ready meals, jams, pâté, soups and cakes. Turning the weekly shop into a family outing, there's a range of books and outdoor clothes on sale for kids, as well as a play area and tables in the lovely sheltered courtyard, with views over the sea a few hundred feet away. The café serves lunch and tea staples – home baking, hot specials, soup and sarnies, with gluten-free cakes on offer.

Location: Girvan, South Ayrshire

Bankhead Farm Shop

Bankhead Farm Shop

The Bankhead Farm Shop is popular with men according to the owner, Nancy Wishart. There’s no cafe, no gift shop and no supermarket crowds and no temptation for impulse buys, so, as Nancy points out, ‘you can’t overspend’. That’s because Bankhead, near the villages of Crombie and Cairneyhill in Fife, is very much a working farm, that just happens to have a shop, not a destination cafe or lifestyle shop selling candles, cushions and crafts. Instead, reasonable prices for the vegetables and fruit piled on a few old office desks in a giant barn that houses the hill of grain
