Argo's Bakery
One of Orkney's oldest family-run businesses, now staffed by the fourth generation, Argo's is a popular fixture on the main shopping streets of Stromness and Kirkwall. Don't leave it too late to visit either location, as their artisan baked bread, rolls and cakes disappear fast from well-laden shelves. Brown, white, corn, muesli and wholemeal are just some of the rolls on offer, while colourful iced cakes stand out among old-fashioned temptations such as paradise slices, treacle pancakes and custard tarts. Biscuits to take home include perkins, Orkney beremeal shortbread and giant flaky water biscuits which go perfectly with local crumbly Grimbister cheese. More recently, they've started making four flavours of fudge and traditional boiled sweets, sold to UK-wide stockists or sent via mail order.

The Bakehouse at 124
The Bakehouse at 124 is part of a fast-growing artisan food revival - bringing treats for the taste buds and an eating experience of a kind that modern production methods fail to match. For us, it means serving breads and baked goods that we turn out fresh every day in small batches. For you, it means a chance to savour the naturally great flavour of simply produced foods.
